So since we're all psychic here, I'm sure we can guess which musical direction the Kings will go on the next album.
They'll probably go in the direction of songs like McFearless and Black Thumbnail, or to a lesser extent Charmer. I would like that, especially stuff like Charmer, which is so experimental and crazy, and not something you hear often.
I'd like it more, though, if they mixed it up more. They need a few more slow blues-drawl songs, like Dusty or Trani. Trunk kind of gets there with the bassline, but not completely. I just don't want to see them abandon the southern grit for new-wavey stuff completely.
The funk of Razz and My Party are so fucking awesome. They should at least one song like that on every album.
So which way do you think they'll go?

I think they should make a gospel album. It would be dirty and pure at the same time adding fuel to the myth. Spiral Staircase reminds me a lot of sort of church jumping music which is crazy since the lyrics are raunchy. I love My Party too, so wouldn't mind if they jumped into a little funk, not RHCP funk but just enough to vibrate the car a little .

I like the Gospel idea, like BRMC's Howl (pure genius that album is...) how they suddenly changed direcitons. But i can't imagine thme doing that, as they want their music to be arena sized osi can just imaqgine it getting bigger (hopefully not tough) im ainge if they brought in a string quartet?

I think they'll go back to no reverb, no mic echo, 2 and a half minute pull-your-pants-down-and-grab-you-by-the-balls rock tracks that will make you glad you love the Kings and laugh at people who buy Nickleback cd's.

you know, I hope they keep it simple... and don't make it too mainstream cause that would turn me way off... I mean they should develop but not into that "let's try to please as many people as possible" sound.

I'd like to see that, but they will surely look at the fact their 'new' direction got them to number 1, so that's unlikely...

They should go in any direction they want... It's been a great ride so far for all of us in the "back seat" of their car. Honestly, would any of us really be upset no matter what direction they take?
I do like from Black Thumbnail to then end of BOTT better than I like the opening few tracks, so if I get a vote, I'd say explore sounds like the second half of the album.

Lock then in a studio, let them go and see what happens i say. Have they let us down yet? I think not. I seriously cant think of a band who have out with 3 very different but equally amazing albums. Most bands cant even do a decent second one!

Yeah, I agree. So far I have had nothing but faith in the band because with everything new that comes from them I have been pleasantly surprised. Not sure how anyone else feels, but I'd like to see more epic openers like Knocked Up. Ever since I heard it for the first time it has been one of my favorite KOL songs. It combines clever lyrics with even more clever instrumentation so hopefully they explore that a little more.

i see a few peopel are talking about going back to the basics, but i could see this more in a 6th album, like White stripes ahve returned to hard rock like thier first album. If they were too go back to basics, they'd have to give it some sort of 'thing' where it showed that there music had grown more or it would seem they are just going back in reverse

the kings have changed their musical directon in every album so far (normally unthinkable in todays music society) - but rather the commit rock 'n' roll suicide (as is what normally happens) the kings have pulled it of. thats impressive - i suppose they could move into a heavier sound (seems unlikely though)
I'd like to see them try to add a more Classic Rock sound in the next album , while maintaining the Southern Blues Rock they had in Because of the Times - That would be impressive
An example of such a band - The Answer (im not saying i want the Kings to sound the same as them - mind you it wouldnt do any harm)

I think the boys are going to (maybe) keep going with that whole echo-y/semi-ethereal/dark & heavy sound they've got going on judging from the large chunk of them that there are in BoTT and the one bside they've got.
I'm liking the sound, man. I like any sound they make. Wow! They're such charmers.

Caleb is quoted in Rolling Stone saying that the new songs are "meaty, full and hearty"--a bit vague but appetising--makes me think of Knocked Up, Charmer, McFearless type stuff.

I think you're probably right with the richer vocals like at the beginning of Black Thumbnail and the good heavy guitars and drums in McFearless which is really stretching them to their full potential.. but I'm not sure what a whole album of tracks like this would sound like, they seem to be quite good at suprising us with their variations for their albums.
