it's 'nothing' these are the lyrics............
Our time as we go | We know our times will change | I talk to Jesus | Jesus he says I'm OK | Pushing and jumping | Jumping the mountain range | Burning up railroad | Railroad from hell to Maine | Why does she say she's on her own | I'll be pacing on the phone | Taking numbers taken blame | Awful sick and tired of the game | She comes from nothing | Hoping for a trace of fame | She's got a birthmark | Birthmark the shape of Maine | And it's cold | And it's cold | It's cold when you're nearing the bottom | Our time as we go | We know our times will change | I'll talk to Jesus | Jesus everyday

Okay, so I was thinking about starting 'The Runner' Appreciation Thread, so I went through about 20 pages of the music section & this is the closest I got. Sorry if I missed one already, and for reviving an old thread, just though it would be better than starting a new one (please don't shoot me mods! ) So back to my original idea... I've read many times on here that The Runner is most people's least favourite song off BOTT, but it happens to be one of my all time favourite KOL songs, definately in my top 10. Just wondering what it is about this song that people like/dislike?

I used to not like it all that much, but now I love it. It's my 8th most played KOL song. I think I used to think that it was just really too slow, but then I listened to the lyrics and liked it a whole lot better. I love how it starts building up and then smooths out and slows down again.

I'm glad there's somebody on here that likes it as much as I do! I agree, it is a slow song, but that's what I like about it, its quite soothing for me. There's just something about the melody that attracts me to it. I never skip it. And I really love the 'oooohs' in the background of the chorus. The guitar parts in the chorus too, so beautiful... I could go on & on!

Its funny, I love the runner (so much!), but its not a song I automatically think of. I don't really know how to explain this, but its like everytime I hear it I go "oh, yea, this song" - I never actively seek it out in the way that I do other ones. But I think I'm just wierd haha. I love the line "and its cold and its cold and its cold when you're near. Cold when you're nearing the bottom". Hearing the first half of it, its like "oh that's mean, its cold when you (the person the song is aimed at (God?)) are near", but then it changes. Which again doesn't really seem to make sense except inside my head. Hmph

I love the line "and its cold and its cold and its cold when you're near. Cold when you're nearing the bottom". I know what you mean - he's saying that he doesn't like being close to God (in the first part of the line) then it changes to mean that the further away from God he gets, the worse of a person he becomes (he gets colder). Im not sure if it was intentional or it just fitted the music better that way but its interesting how many different meanings you can take from one line of a song(whether the artist meant it or not)!!

I also love the very last "our time as we go" that everybody sings, it could be the end of a film or something. Seriously, I'm not a religious person but this song makes me want to be, just a little... Just to know what it's like.

I love 'The Runner'. I instantly get transported to a US setting when listening to it - don't know whether its the lyrics or the sound. I'm a strange one I know!
Haha I used to hear London too!! Also used to think Caleb said 'and its cold when you're near and the bottle' but then I quickly realised it made no sense and that I should look at the booklet. Doh!

This is actually one of my absolute favorites...second only to the likes of Arizona and CA Waiting. I remember when I first bought BOTT. I spent the whole afternoon listening to the thing over and over, and the sun started to set just as The Runner came on. (If you don't know, California has beautiful sunsets.) It was so perfect, so peaceful. I think about it whenever I get stressed. The part that gets me the most is the lead guitar picking out those sweet country notes after the chorus.

Definitely in my TOP 5 KOL songs. I always find new meaning in it, almost every time I listen to it. Actually have "I talk to G-d every day and G-d says I am okay" written on my office wall, in big beautiful flowing script.

I love "The Jesus Song" too! My high school best friend has become really religious and I'd like to introduce her to KOL, so I have considered being like, "Hey listen, here's a song about Jesus!" (And oh yeah, religious friend, KOL absolutely never did drugs or whored it up with hookers and random women!) As for the song, my favorite part is how Caleb sings "on her own." Kills me. I have also convinced myself that the birthmark on the back of my leg is very similar to the shape of Maine! (Seriously, how creative is that? A birthmark the shape of Maine!)

Jess, I know what you mean about the religion thing...I'm totally not into all that but a tiny part of me just sighs for the spiritual stuff and it's because of this song. On a slightly less deep note I love the way he sings "bo-ho-o-ttooohhhm"...if you know what I mean, like really pronouncing the oh in that last syllable...always makes me smile. The way his voice sounds like it's catching, all emotional and he can't quite keep it in.... chillbumps
