not totally sure why i'm making this thread, or why i'm so excited but i thought i'd draw attention to the fact that i was watching the video of them performing at the astoria a couple of years ago.the guys start playing dusty..and jared plays a guitar for his bass part! ooooooo!
am i making this up?? am i the ony one who's noticed/got excited by this?? is it so that it helps tie in the bass line with the acoustic, country feel to the song??

Please then enlighten me. Besides heavier strings, find me a difference to classify it as not a guitar.

1) Ancestory The electric Bass was develoed as a replacement for the upright/double bass which s of the Viol family (not to be confused with the more odern Violin family of instruments., the electric guitar is a decendant of the guitar. 2) Temprement a) As bass can be played fretless it can play outside of equal temprement b) Bass players are less likely to reside up their own behinds. 3) The bizzare, illogical and freaky way guitars are tunned whereas the bas is tuned in a logical and mathmatical way. 4) Basses are sexy guitars are not. 5)I could go on but really your not going to win.

Basses are tuned to the same first four strings as the guitar is for standard fyi. So your going to have to explain to me the freaky and illogical way guitars are tuned in comparison with the electric bass, that is after all what we are talking about. And you can make all the "basses are sexy, guitars are not" and the arbitrary "your not going to win" arguments/claims you want but it still doesn't deter from the fact that an electric bass is fundamentally the same thing as an electric guitar just with heavier strings for lower octaves. All the other minor differences are a result of the heavier strings. Have you ever heard the name - bass guitar? When it comes to long necked string instruments, your basing any difference on changes in the layout of the fundamental components. They still all work the same way, and produce the same sound type. But i really have no beef with the bass, your the one with the unfounded sever disliking of the guitar.

The freaky and illogical part is the how the top two strngs of a guitar are tuned. If a guitar was to be tuned logically the top two strings would be C and Fthat they are B and E (or whatever you drop tune to) on a guitar marks one of the fundamental differences. Basses follow the tradition of the Viol, in each string being tuned in 4ths. The reason I raise this is that the guitar was developed as a fundamentally polyphonic instrument the top two strings beng tunned to make it easier for you to play chords. The bass is essentially a monophonic instrument.
The name Bass G*****r, was developed as a marketing tool in the 50's by fender to attempt to put their new instruments in context this was largely why the P bass was styed to resemble a strat. Other companies had the right idea but were largely steamrolled outof the market by Gibson and Fender leaving a fundamental lie in popular culture. Because Fender and Gibson say it does that make it true? Yes I have a pathological dislike of guitars and guitarists.
You hit a cymbal with a stick does that make it a drum?

You hit a cymbal with a stick does that make it a drum? no, you hit a drum with a stick then it's a drum when you hit a cymbal with a stick it's just a cymbal. It's quite simple really *taking the piss* *taking the piss* same as when you hit a cowbell with a stick it's a cowbell or when you hit a small child with a stick it's still a small child

i find a willow branch is good or an oak tree branch. both light yet sturdy.
failing that any old piece of steel does the job
