SEATTLE POST-INTELLIGENCER seattlepi.nwsource.com/pop/232930_kings18q.htmlKings of Leon need to loosen up -- a lot Monday, July 18, 2005 By TIZZY ASHER SPECIAL TO THE POST-INTELLIGENCER A good rock 'n' roll band should coax and woo the audience, teasing them with the promise of sexuality and smut. Given the masculine bluster that appears on their records, Kings of Leon should be experts in this field. MUSIC REVIEW KINGS OF LEON with Secret Machines and Shout Out Louds WHERE: Moore Theatre WHEN: Saturday night Sadly, the Tennessee band was about as engaging as dirt when it played the Moore Theatre Saturday night. Despite having just finished up an arena tour with U2, they looked strangely rigid and uncomfortable on stage. I've seen 80-year-old polka players put on more energetic stage shows. Kings ran through nearly every track on their two albums, including singles "The Bucket," "Molly's Chambers" and "Four Kicks." The versions were fast and tight, but sounded strangely flat when compared with album counterparts. Vocalist/rhythm guitarist Caleb Followill stood rigid as a lamppost, mustering only a few knee-bends and sidesteps. (His pants were exceedingly tight -- perhaps it was a wardrobe malfunction.) His vocals were monotonic and mushy, and his between-song banter non-existent. Having the mics set up a good 20 feet from the lip of the stage only accentuated his lack of showmanship. Lead guitarist Matthew Followill stared only at his fretboard during his brief, nervous solos. He and Caleb barely acknowledged each other, let alone fed off each other's energy. A perfunctory three-song encore led off with an amped version of "Holy Roller Novocaine." Here, Caleb loosened slightly, and even kicked down his mic stand as a final parting gesture. Sadly, it was too little, too late. The adoring audience seemed unfazed by the weak stage presence. Men were jumping and dancing in unison, and throwing devil horn hands in the air. During "Trani," a slow song off the band's debut "Young Manhood," the requisite lighters appeared. It's obvious that Kings of Leon have matured too fast. The major label apparatus has plunked them down in big theater shows before they've had time to develop true confidence. The bravado of their interviews and records is just that -- bravado. Openers the Secret Machines fared much better with a long set of expansive space rock. First openers the Shout Out Louds went on at 7:30, even though the ticket listed an 8 p.m. start time, thus making them invisible to all but a dedicated few. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Tizzy Asher welcomes your feedback, comments and juicy gossip. im going to track that man down and bitch slap him! as engaging as dirt? then dirt is fucking engaging! I've met some really intresting dirt, honestly, we had quite a conversation one night at a party. We drank some beers together, and then watched the sun rise. I don't think I'll ever meet another dirt like it, but what we shared together was quite special. I will never forget that dirt. Excuse me while I wipe a tear.

I can see why people would say that they're not that engaging, but when you're their for the music I haven't seen many bands better.
